Fresh off a stint on the star-studded ’70s Rock & Romance Cruise, America continues the 2020 portion of its 50th anniversary world tour this Friday, February 21, in Brookville, New York.

The famed folk-rock act, led by founding members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, have nearly 30 confirmed upcoming North American dates on their schedule, mapped out through a June 27 concert in North Bethesda, Maryland. The group also will be visiting Europe for a series of shows in July.

In honor of the milestone anniversary, and to promote their tour, Beckley and Bunnell have taken part in a new Q&A in which they discuss a variety of topics. Here are a couple highlights:

Looking back, what has surprised you most in your career?

Beckley: “As great as any of the singular successes have been over the years, I’d have to say the longevity itself is something we’d never have considered and probably the greatest surprise.”

Bunnell: “The initial success was a surprise, with the first album [America] and single [‘A Horse with No Name’] both going to #1, but I don’t think we ever thought that 50 years later we’d still be performing close to 100 shows a year!”

Is there a favorite scene [in a film or TV show] you have where your song is used?

Bunnell: “I loved hearing ‘[A] Horse with No Name’ being used in an episode of Breaking Bad as Walter White was literally driving through the desert!”

Beckley: “My personal favorite is an episode of The Sopranos where one of the characters was taken out [shot] while driving and as the car came crashing to a stop, ‘Sister Golden Hair’ was playing on the car radio. Excellent.”
