The owners of a gym in Bellmawr who defied the governor’s orders and opened their gym despite Covid lockdowns have lost their appeal and now have been ordered to pay 124,000 dollars in fines. Frank Trumbetti and Ian Smith gained national attention when they reopened their Atilis Gym in May 2020 even after local police issued summonses and the front door of their business was blocked by a plywood barricade. The state then began fining the owners $15,000 each day they opened for a total of eight days. The state appellate court ruled Wednesday that there was no merit in the arguments brought by the owners, therefore they are bound by the public health rules from the NJ Department of Health and have been ordered to pay the fine.
