The next Deftones album will feature a reunion with the band’s early producer.
The Sacramento alt-metallers have revealed that Terry Date — who produced the first four Deftones albums, including 2000’s beloved White Pony — will be manning the boards for the group’s upcoming ninth studio effort, the follow-up to 2016’s Gore.
As proof, Deftones posted a photo of Date in the studio on their Instagram Monday night.
Date returning to the fold makes sense, given that frontman Chino Moreno previously told Kerrang! that recording the upcoming album reminded him of the creative process behind White Pony.
In addition to his work with Deftones, Date has also produced and engineered albums for artists including Soundgarden, Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Bring Me the Horizon, The Smashing Pumpkins and Slayer.
Meanwhile, drummer Abe Cunningham shared an update on the upcoming album in an interview with Australia’s Mixdown.
“We did things a little bit differently this time,” Cunningham explained. “We stretched everything out over the course of a couple of years, rather than blasting through in one go. The process has been mixed with about a year-long break, that we all agreed upon.”
“Being rested and taking that time off really made us appreciate what we’re doing even more,” he added. “When we’re all laughing and smiling and coming up with stuff together, just like when we were 17…it’s a beautiful thing.”
