Illinois state officials are encouraging taxpayers to take advantage of the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit.
The credit works much like the federal Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers below a certain income level are eligible, but Sam Salustro from the Illinois Department of Revenue says the best way to be sure is to check it out at IRS.gov.
A couple filing jointly with three or more kids could make up to $56,000 and still qualify.
The department says 20,000 Illinois taxpayers who filed for the federal income tax credit didn't do the same on their state taxes even though they would generally qualify for both if they qualified for one.
The IRS believes 6 million eligible taxpayers nationwide don’t file for their Earned Income Tax Credit.
