Kewanee Man Gets 30 Days in Jail for Contempt of Court

The Kewanee man accused of the shooting in the 100 block of S. Grace Street in January was given 30 days in jail for contempt of court because he continued to be combative and interrupt the proceedings.  Judge Colby Hathaway told Andrew Luce multiple time to stop talking, especially when Mr. Luce began cursing and belittling his attorney.  Andrew Luce, 36, is currently in custody on a $100,000 (10%) bond for allegedly shooting at the occupied garage that was converted into a bedroom.  No one was injured in the shooting.  An Apple iPhone, that traced back to Luce, was on the ground by the shell casings. The iPhone tracked movement from Luce’s residence to the empty lot where the shooting occurred, the movement was a walking speed.

Attorney Dyer said that Mr. Luce refused to review the evidence with him but Luce said he has a disability and has a hard time reading.  Luce told Judge Hathaway that he wants a new attorney and said that Mr. Dyer is no longer his attorney.  Judge Hathaway told Mr. Luce to stop speaking but Luce continued to interrupt.  Luce said “they are trying to give me 60 years for a shooting I didn’t do” and that his attorney wasn’t “fighting for me”.  Judge Hathaway told Luce that he can hire any attorney he wants but the court was not going to appoint a different Public Defender.  Luce claims to be mentally incompetent and told Judge Hathaway that “you are setting me up to fail”.  Judge Hathaway told Luce “I’m not setting you up to fail”.  After being warned about interrupting court, Luce said “hold me in contempt” while he slammed his fist down on the railing imitating a gavel.  Judge Hathaway told Luce he got his final warning and held him in contempt of court.  The 30 days in jail will not count towards any credit for time served for a conviction.  The Jury Pre-Trial was continued to June 22, 2023, at 9 AM.
