The National has released a cover of the INXS hit “Never Tear Us Apart,” recorded for an upcoming charity album benefiting the ongoing Australia bushfire relief efforts.
Titled Songs for Australia, the compilation was curated by Julia Stone, one half of the Australia indie folk duo Angus & Julia Stone. She tells Rolling Stone that The National frontman Matt Berninger suggested the INXS cover.
“Matt came straight back to me after I presented the idea for the record,” Stone says. “He was so thrilled to have an opportunity to help.”
You can listen to The National’s take on “Never Tear Us Apart” now via RollingStone.com. Songs for Australia will be released digitally on March 12, and on physical formats in June.
The National’s most recent album is 2019’s I Am Easy to Find.
By the way, Bishop Briggs previously recorded a cover of “Never Tear Us Apart” in 2018 for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack.
