MACOMB, IL – Macomb Police are investigating the death of a man who was stabbed early Sunday morning.
In a statement released by Macomb Police Chief Jerel Jones, the man was found lying on the ground in the 100 block of N. Lafayette St. First responders arrived on scene and provided medical assistance to him, until he was transported to McDonough County Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased at 2:15 a.m.
Macomb Officers, with the assistance of the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the WIU Office of Public Safety, began to disperse crowds from the area and secured the scene to collect evidence. During investigation, they learned that a second individual, later identified as Brandon Whiteman, 21, of Macomb, was taken to McDonough County Hospital by a private vehicle, where he was treated for superficial cuts that he received during the altercation.
Authorities located evidence that connected Whiteman’s involvement to an altercation on the square at the time of the stabbing, and he was detained at the hospital and taken into custody. Whiteman is currently lodged at the McDonough County Jail on a charge of First Degree Murder.
The investigation is currently on-going.
