Neil Young will be hitting the road soon with his old backing group Crazy Horse, with whom he recorded his latest studio album, 2019’s Colorado.
In a post on his Neil Young Archives website, the folk-rock legend revealed that he and the band are planning North American trek called the Crazy Horse Barn Tour, which will feature concerts at older arenas.
“Many of the old places we used to play are gone now, replaced by new coliseums we have to book [a] year in advance and we don’t want to go to anyway. That’s not the way we like to play,” Young explains. “It sounds way [too] much like a real job if you have to book it and wait a year, so we have decided to play the old arenas — not the new sports facilities put up by corporations for their sports teams.”
He adds, “Largely soulless, these new buildings cost a fortune to play in. We want to play in a couple of months because we feel like it. To us, it’s not a regular job.”
Neil goes on to share two separate lists of venues, one featuring arenas that have been demolished and the other featuring 31 still-existing arenas.
Among the latter are such well-known venues as Madison Square Garden in New York City, The Forum near Los Angeles, Chicago Arena, the Cow Palace in San Francisco, the CNE Coliseum in Toronto and Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
Young adds that news about the tour will be “coming pretty soon.”
The current Crazy Horse lineup features the band’s founding bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, as well as multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren, who played with the group during the 1970s and rejoined the lineup in 2018.
