Doris L. Stabler, 94, of Neponset, died Monday, May 15, 2023, at her home. Doris was born November 6, 1928, in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Frederick and Ferne (McKown) Baumann. Doris graduated from Manhattan High School in 1946. She worked for Southwestern Telephone Company until 1952, then transferred to San Diego Pacific Telephone Co. until 1954. Doris married Donald “Jess” on July 4, 1953, in San Diego, CA after only six dates. Following Jess’ military service in the Navy, they returned to his hometown of Neponset to farm and raise a family.
Surviving are their eight children, Dennis (Peggy) Stabler of Ozark, MO, Kevin Stabler of Neponset, Anita Stabler of Elmwood, IL, Crystal (Bill) Sturtevant of Washington, IA, William (Deb Kingston) Stabler of Blue Hill, Maine, Jeffrey (Teresa) Stabler of Wakefield, Nebraska, Marla (David) Roller of Kewanee, IL and Nancy (Mark) Anderson of Hailey, Idaho; 21 grandchildren, Eric, Adam, Sarah, Dustin, Joshua, Jess, Abby, Cheri, Brandy, Jonathon, Carter, Arlo, Quinn, Mandy, Molly, Will, Danny, Nathan, Kayla, DJ, and Wyatt; 24 great grandchildren, Alexa, Kylie, Oliver, Owen, Brooklyn, Noah, Jaelyn, Jacob, Jonathon, Remi, Micah, Bentley, Jaxson, Jacen, Michael, Alex, Allie, Reagan, Rylee, Lucas, Jack, Violet, Shawn, and Landon, JJ. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jess in 2013; and a brother, Tharon.
Doris was a member of the Neponset Methodist Church, as well as their United Methodist Women group; Neponset Women’s Thursday Club serving as president for many years and later serving as secretary; Beta Sigma Phi social sorority in Manhattan, Kansas. Doris enjoyed making Christmas stockings for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, bowling for many years, crafting, taking pictures, Facebook and Pinterest and she especially loved spending time with her family. Doris was an avid Kansas State Wildcat fan and wore her purple faithfully on game days.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Golnick-Schueneman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the funeral home. Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate. Per Doris’ wishes, please wear casual attire. Burial will be in West Neponset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
