To obtain a motorcycle classification on your driver’s license in the state of Illinois, you must pass a separate motor-cycle examination.   However, drivers ages 16 and 17 are required to take both a Cycle Driver Testing Course provided by IDOT AND an additional motorcycle driver’s test at a Secretary of State driver’s facility.

State Representative Brad Fritts (R-Dixon) is sponsoring legislation to make a change in the requirements by eliminating the duplicate motorcycle testing requirement.

House Bill 2582 still requires 16-17 year olds to attend and successfully complete a MSF Basic Rider Course, which includes the standard Secretary of State riding test as part of its curriculum and is a higher standard than what is placed on potential riders 18+ in age. However, it eliminates the requirement to test a 2nd time at a Secretary of state facility.

The bill has been approved in committee and now heads to the House floor for consideration.
