Two contracts approved by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) Wednesday are moving the Atlantic City Expressway closer to total electronic toll collection and removing manned toll booths. Combined, the two new contracts are worth $35 million, pushing the total cost of modernizing the toll system to almost $200 million. One contract is to installation of eleven toll zones along the highway in both directions. Also included in plans are the demolition of the “legacy tolling plaza structures”. The new tolling system is scheduled to debut May 2025.
