Two dolphins perish near Middletown Wednesday

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center received a call Wednesday of two stranded dolphins near the base pier at the Naval Weapons Station Earle Fire and Emergency Services Department at Sandy Hook Bay. Center staff found two Common dolphins, an adult and a calf, stranded on a sandbar approximately 150 feet out. The adult was deceased and the calf was in an “extremely weakened condition” and was euthanized after a veterinary examination determined the young dolphin would not survive. The adult was recovered from the beach near Leonardo State Marina in Middletown Thursday and will be buried, the calf will receive a necropsy to learn more.
